17 Years Ago Today it All Began...

Seventeen years ago today Juan and I had our first date. I still remember it clearly. My older brother asked me to go on a date with Juan so he could ask a girl that both he and Juan thought was cute out. The idea was that I would then leave the door open for my brother to go after the girl he liked. I reluctantly agreed. See Juan and I worked together and at the very wise age of 18 I thought I knew exactly what I was looking for and a guy I worked with wasn't it. We worked very different schedules, we went to different colleges, we lived in different towns, we hung out with different people. I mean we had nothing in common, unless you counted the fact the he was best friends with my brother, which is a role I clearly had dibs on since childhood!

Needless to say I agreed to the date when Juan asked me out. I thought it would be one date and nothing more. Especially after his choice of date. HA! We went out with my brother and the girl of his interest for a dinner at Taco Bell followed by the movie A Nightmare Before Christmas. Oh yeah he was a charmer! But what I did learn in that one night was that he was sweet as can be, wicked smart and hilarious! I couldn't remember ever having had such a good time. I laughed so much. Sitting there watching the movie, I kept looking over at Juan laughing and thinking, I can't believe he likes this movie - what a kid. But at one moment I looked at him laughing up at the screen and it hit me so hard, it was like a flash forward to my future life and I knew in an instant I would marry him. When we left the movie theatre I dragged him over to a photo booth to take a picture with me. He must have thought I was nuts! But I knew one day I would be showing that picture to our grand kids, so I didn't care how corny it must have seemed. By now you all know we got married and now have three beautiful daughters. I would post the picture, if it didn't mean digging it out of an old photo album in a box in the garage. Yeah I'm lazy like that!

We don't really celebrate the anniversary of our first date. We remember it and sometimes will watch A Nightmare Before Christmas. It is almost like a silent anniversary type thing. But since we were just talking about buying the movie on Blu-Ray and watching it tonight, I thought I would share the story of our first date. Oh and in case you were wondering, he's still a huge Tim Burton fan and so isn't our oldest daughter, who offered to lend me her Jack Skeleton shirt for today! He also still has me laughing as well as our three girls. If any of you are single, if you find a guy that makes you laugh, he's most likely a keeper!

Today's NOTD is one that I received. It's a dark vampy burnt red labeled as a purple go figure. It kind of reminds me of Chanel Vamp(Original Rouge Noir version), but a smidgen darker or the newest by China Glaze Naughty & Nice. Nothing amazingly special or unusual color wise, but the formula was great, the color saturation was great, and it is still beautiful. Kind of reminds me of the mid 90's when these vampy colors really started hitting the scene. Hmm about 17 years ago if I remember correctly! ;)
With flash so you can see the color
It takes on a very dark hue depending on the light

I keep imagining this with some gold sparkle going through it. Does my brain ever just stop and enjoy a color as is anymore? I may have to try this.

  1. Congratulations on your anniversary! If you have it, you might try China Glaze Golden Enchantment over this. Very pretty!

  2. i agree with zara. golden enchantment is nice. i use that or fairy dust to "spice" up a nail look without having to take off & do nails all the way over. :)

  3. Aw! What a sweet story.

Golden Enchantment would be gorgeous over that polish.

  4. Guys that make you laugh! I understand you so well. It feels just right when you laugh togeher and you know that it is meant to go further.
Funny thing, I just looked over the pictures and imagined it with golden sparkle. Then I read your note :)

    And happy anniversary! :)

  5. This is very nice! Happy Anniversary!

  6. Goosebumps again! Goosebumps when you told me the story the first time, and goosebumps reading it!!! :)

  7. what a sweet, sweet story. Congratulations on 17 years! These days, that MEANS something. :)
As for the polish, you've been bitten by the create bug...just keep creating, you'll be satisfied when you are satisfied...remember Ji's story and keep on creating til you love what you've made!

  8. Aww, that so cute, I love stories like that.
Even though me and my boyfriend haven't been together for as long as you and your husband have ( we've been together 2 years) I love thinking back to our first date and how special it was :)

I am also a HUGE Tim Burton fan, saw The Nightmare Before Christmas in the theater when I was 6 with my parents :)
