Nails Have a New Shape - Almond!

Almond shape nails are making a comeback. From the runways at NY Fashion Week Fall 2011 to some of the most fashion forward celebrities. Everyone seems to be wearing the new shape. I decided I had to try out the shape, but I have been having a hard time pulling the shape off without feeling too retro. Maybe my nails were too short for the trend when I started? It just wasn't working for me. I told myself I would give this shape a month's long try before deciding on how I feel. After all 21 days makes a habit right? Well based on how fast my nails grow, it looks like I will have to give it two months instead.

I was looking online for some looks I could try and came across some celebrity photos sporting this new shape in a neutral color. I have to say I would never think to wear a neutral color with this nail shape, but after seeing these images, I thought I would give it a try. It's just polish, after all, I can always take it off if I don't like it!

What's My Name video still

Since one of my upcoming colors is a neutral(Cruisin' Nude), I figured why not try it out. The problem is I rejected the neutral the lab sent me as a match. Of course I could use the batch I made up, but I happened to have fallen in love with the color I received.  In the sample the lab sent me, the shimmer seems to be "eaten" by the opaque polish and the color is also a shade off. But I am loving this color non the less and wanted to sport it for the weekend.

Doesn't it look amazing with this shape? Why didn't I think of this?

At the Strawberry Festival this weekend. Had to take a picture using the Sepia feature on my camera. Love how the manicure looks here!

I have to say after this weekend with the Cruisin' Nude reject on my nails, I am really digging this nail shape. So much so, I don't want to change my polish or my nail shape! But and there's always a but isn't there. Here are some things I am noticing with this new shape, which make me think I need to go back to my old square shape. I tend to stab myself and everything around me. Which is weird because it isn't like I am new to long nails. But with this shape I seem to keep stabbing everything. I have hit various nails so hard it's a miracle they haven't broken. My nails also feel weaker. With the sidewalls filed away, my nails tend to bend and give a bit more. Which I guess could be the reason for no breaks thus far. (I better go knock on some wood.) I have debated putting a nail hardener on the free edge, but I fear that will bring a break on if they don't flex as I stab away at everything around me. To top it off because the sidewalls are filed everything seems to get in the base of my nail where the free edge and nail bed meet. When I wash my hair, it gets in there. When I paint my nails the polish floods in there. It is kind of a pain. Now I have to learn how to do things differently with these new nails. This shape is also definitely not condusive for a mom with three kids and tons of laundry & cleaning to do. Oh wait, is that a problem? That means someone else will have to pick up the laundry & cleaning? Hmmm maybe I'll keep this shape after all...
So how about you are you going to take the plunge into the new "it" shape and length for nails? I'd love to hear what you think of this new trend.

  1. I love this shape and would love to have it if my fingers were shorter but I have like these long ET fingers so I stick with square or squoval LOL Your nails are so pretty though.

  2. It really looks nice on you. They totally look like almonds. :) I however have noticed that when I do try to change my nail shape they will break. And also, I can't play with pointy stuff. ;) I'll probably slit something by accident...

  3. I don't think almond is the shape for me but I love the glamorous way it looks.

  4. I love this nail shape. I use to wear this shape in my acrylic days. I think the celebrities are wearing acrylics or gels to maintain them.

I'm having second thoughts on this shape for myself now because I don't want to file them on the sides thinking they will break easy.

I think the almond shape makes a nice funky french :)

  5. Almond shaped nails look so elegant! They make fingers look so long, yours look gorgeous! I'll probably give it a shot some time, but I just filed my nails so they're square and it's barely a week, so I'm definitely going to try out my square nails first. I think square nails have an advantage over oval nails, when I type or when I hit stuff, I'm under the impression that the pressure is equally spread out over the entire tip, rather than just at the center of the tip as in almond nails. I'm just afraid of them breaking, I don't think my nails are as strong as yours!

  6. It's the only way I have my nails - funny, I stabbed EVERYTHING the one time I had squared nails... I did it once and then never again. Almond does take more work in the beginning, I always use a glass file but then they grow out nicely because it follows the natural shape of your nail. Thanks for the post!

  7. your nails really look nice and elegant with that shape (I think it's perfect for neutrals/reds)! Actually here in Italy this shape was quite common (in the 80-90, before the "square" fashion arrive from US), I sported it too (I noticed it recently in an old picture), but now that I am accustomed to my squoval, I can't think about filing sides or stabbing my kids (your comment about stabbing and hitting everything really made me LOL)!

  8. I kind of want that shape now. I have fat stubbly fingers, and even though it's easier to keep my nails square because of my c-curve, the corners snap off and it looks crazy. -__-

Anywho, I love the look on you. Elegant. ^_^

  10. I really like them on you! I don't know if I could pull them off, my nails aren't long enough (at least I don't think they are) but with my stubby fingers maybe it would be worth a try to make them look longer!

  11. Your new shape looks smashing on you but I am passing on this trend. My nails are too delicate to go almond. I'll just admire everyone else's galmorgous nails.

  13. I've always been afraid to go with the almond shape because I have trouble growing my nails out in the first place and I don't want to make them weaker. They look great on you, though! My nails have been getting stronger lately, too, so I may have to try it...

  14. @LYou are too funny! I thought I had long fingers too, but I think this helps soften the look now that I'm getting used to them!

  15. @PerdyClaws SO far so good. No breaks yet. I don't think I'll be able to let them get too much longer though.

  16. @Kimberly I think now that I am starting to get used the shape, I am feeling a bit more glamourous too!

  17. @rmcandlelight (nailsbeautiqued) I think you're right. I notice some of their nails look a bit thick.

  18. @CherylI agree! I think the square and squaval shapes are much stronger. I added a really strong strengthener last night to try to make them a bit stronger. Let's see if that works.

  19. @PolishGaloreSo you;re saying it's going to get easier? I feel like I need to file them more often because the "point" seems to naturally file down. I am hoping it does get easier though. So far I am still stabbing things. Oops!

  20. @maisenzasmaltoAll I read was you're in Italy! That & Australia are the two places I have always dreamed of visiting. Now with the blog, I want to go to so many more places, it is like the world has opened up for me. One day...
And yes - I stabbed my daughter with my nail handing her something yesterday! I felt so bad! I hope I get control over these nails soon! HA!

  21. @ChaosButterflyI think you should try it. I have one nail that has a bit of a c-curve and it actually looks the best on that nail. I wish I had that issue on all my nails! I say try it!

  22. @jbrobeckThanks! So you're telling me I'll never stop stabbing things! HA! But I think I just might like this new shape after all.

  23. @Dainty Darling DigitsThank you. It will make your nails look longer, or at least mine look longer now.

  24. @Ice QueenI hear you. Two years ago my nails would not have been strong enough for this shape. But they are much stronger now.

  25. @ZaraMine were very weak a few years ago. Now I am amazed at how strong they are. It took a lot of work and dedication to get them to this point, but I am glad I put the effort in. Give it a little more time and you will get there!
